Mumbai: K J Somaiya Institute of Engineering makes it to the top three in a National Youth technovation challenge for engineering colleges.
Finalists included IIT Madras, IIT Delhi and K J Somaiya College of Engineering.
Engineering colleges from across India competed with their "Innovative" projects that were part of the student’s education curriculum. Around 120 proposals from colleges across India participated in the competition that is annually organised by Maruti Suzuki Colors of Youth.
KJ Somaiya Engineering School student’s project – an Autonomous Water Rover (AWR) provides critical data of the quality of water bodies across various water parameters such as pH, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. The AWR can be used for various applications; from the data collected being used by Government and other organisations to manage water bodies used for fish farming; channel depth monitoring in ports; underwater surveillance for the navy; emergency relief operations where in cases of floods and other natural calamities.
The Autonomous Water Rover criss-crosses the path specified by the user using GPS coordinates or through a web interface with continuous obstacle avoidance. It’s different sensors for pH, conductivity, temperature and turbidity give real-time updates about the different features of the water body through the website. The rover’s location on a map can also be tracked through the website.
The total cost for creating the AWR was roughly Rs 70,000.
“The project autonomous water rover is also our final year project, and we have been working on it for the last 9 months, The competition was a great experience and provided us a platform to showcase our project in front of some of the best from the industry, winning the competition gives us great joy and are hopeful that our victory will also motivate other students from KJSSE "says Chirag Shah team member K.J. Somaiya School of Engineering.
"It is a great feeling of pride to witness our students in the top 3 in the country. They have worked hard. This is an excellent platform to enhance the student’s skills through the creation, the design, the assembly and the operation of robots. It certainly promotes leadership, team building and problem-solving skills throughout the process of designing and building” The involvement and dedication of our students is indeed very significant.” says Shubha Pandit, Principal K J Somaiya College of Engineering.”
